Color Label Adds New Nilpeter FA-17 to Impressive Line-up

Lonnie Melskens, Jesper Jørgensen, and Erik Grønning with the new FA-17

Long-time Nilpeter partner, Color Label A/S, has signed a deal for a new 8-colour Nilpeter FA-17, which will replace a couple of old FA-4200 17’’ flexo presses. This investment aims to modernize and automate in-house processes.

Color Label, located in Aarhus, Denmark, was established in 1980 by Erik Grønning, who is still at the helm. A key to success for the company has always been highly reliable equipment that ensures on-time delivery. Color Label has an impressive line-up of 10 Nilpeter flexo presses, most recently adding a fully refurbished FA-2500, and will now replace two old FA-4200 with a new 8-colour FA-17, complete with advanced equipment for extended content label production.

Color Label digitalises flexo – a step into the future
“The installation of our new Nilpeter FA-17 is a great step forward for Color Label, and it is definitely a milestone for us towards digitalising flexo. It gives us a wide range of new possibilities when it comes to automation of our in-house processes, and it optimizes our operation, quality, and effectivity significantly”, says Owner and CEO of Color Label A/S, Erik Grønning.

Always in the market for the best solutions
“Since Color Label was founded in 1980 and kicked off with a Nilpeter Rotolabel F200, a steady fleet of Nilpeter presses has been added to Color Labels production floor over the years, always seeking new boundaries with the highest standards in quality and technology. The latest installation of the FA-17 with full Automation package cements this path forward. We are proud of our long-term cooperation with Color Label”, says Jesper Jørgensen, Global Sales Manager, Nilpeter A/S.

The Most Versatile Flexo Press on the Market
The FA-Line is the most versatile flexo press on the market – designed to accommodate the printer’s ever-growing needs, and built around the modern print operator, with an intuitive user interface and fully mobile print controls.

A benchmark of flexibility and modularity, the FA allows printers to enhance the performance of their press with Value-Adding Units, Application and Automation Packages, according to application needs and budget. Future customisations are often done with a simple press of a button. All main components are produced in-house at Nilpeter, meaning higher production quality and control.

A Leading Label Supplier
Established in 1980, Color Label is one of the leading Danish suppliers of self-adhesive labels to the food industry, the chemical industry, and for retail trade. Color Label is a service-oriented and innovative company that strives to solve any label challenge regardless of the printing and delivery requirements. Over the years, capacity has multiplied through investments in new and more efficient machinery, strong IT management, and the optimum physical facilities. After the latest expansion Color Label has now more than 3,600 sq. m. at their disposal.

OMNI Systems moves into prime labels with Martin Automatic and Mark Andy technology

OMNI Systems President Mike Murton, Maintenance & Quality Manager Chris Allen, Bob Hoffman Sales Manager Martin Automatic, and OMNI’s Director of Operations & Sales Erik Majkrzak with the new multi-colour Mark Andy press fitted with a Martin MBS unwind/splicer that will move the company into the prime label business

If you looked for a high-volume label converter that offered low fixed prices, proven quality, and a delivery service second to none, you would look no further than OMNI Systems, the Cleveland, OH based business that is the largest privately-owned thermal media company in the USA.  Established in 1990 and wholly owned by Adam DeFrancesco, OMNI claims its 144,000 sq ft 24/7 operational plant at Mayfield Village offers saving of up to 40% on the industry’s high quality label media from its numerous strategic locations across the US.

How does OMNI do it?  By an ongoing program of investment that has seen seven new Mark Andy presses installed since 2019 and all of them fitted with Martin Automatic MBS unwind/splicers.  In fact, OMNI now has 20 Mark Andy presses installed parallel to each other from 7” (180mm) to 20” (510mm), and all are fitted with Martin MBS systems – the view down the line is impressive.  Highlighting the repeatability of its volume business, OMNI says that one of its presses has run the same job, with only minor color variations, 24/7 for the past 10 years.

The company built its business on simple one-, two- and three-color work which in 2020 generated sales close to $95m and showed a five-year increase of 65%.  Its customer portfolio includes all the major retail brands for which it can make and justify substantial claims: more than $1m annual cost savings on one label account, an annual budget reduction of 40% on another, and continuing to provide a year-on-year price reduction for the world’s leading e-commerce company for 20 consecutive years.

Renowned for its cost-effective production of secondary labels, it was only a matter of time before OMNI’s customers began to apply pressure for the company to move into prime labels and offer a single-source supply.  Company President Mike Murton explained: “We are experts at managing exponential growth without deviating from our commitment to high-quality and low prices.  The opportunity to carry this over from our traditional work to the more complex and sophisticated world of prime labels, using trusted technology from Mark Andy and Martin, gave us a clear opening to develop our business in new areas, initially with the security of work from existing customers.”

The result was the installation of a Mark Andy Performance Series P7E press earlier this year, fitted with a Martin Automatic MBS unwind/splicer, and the order for a second identical configuration, which is due towards the end of 2022.  The latest Mark Andy presses have the 20” (510mm) web width and are fitted with Vetaphone corona treaters for film label applications, 10-UV flexo print units and turn bars.  The Martin MBS units offer non-stop operation with built-in roll loading for a variety of substrates from film to laminate and paperboard, with a maximum roll diameter of 50” (1270mm) and top production speed of 300m/min.

For those unfamiliar with the ‘butt splice’ technique of Martin’s MBS range, it is designed for web-fed applications where the end of an expiring roll is joined to the beginning of another.  The two ends are trimmed straight and brought together so that the ends do not overlap. A thin tape, over the top or bottom of the splice, or both, holds the splice together, which is required in applications where the thickness of overlapping webs is unacceptable, like film or paper-based labels.   The whole splicing process is performed without slowing or stopping the press to reduce waste and maintain print quality.

According to Chris Allen, Maintenance and Quality Manager at OMNI: “By allowing us to run our presses non-stop at optimum speed, Martin Automatic technology has been a major factor in us achieving our cost and productivity goals, which would have been impossible otherwise.  Each one of their systems here, now numbering 21 with another to come shortly, is a model of reliability,” he added, pointing to the three small boxes of spare parts that is all OMNI keeps for maintaining the Martins.

High efficiency goes together with sustainability at OMNI.  The company is proud of its procurement process that sees more than 99% of its face stock sourced from FSC approved resources, and a similar figure for its adhesives that meet TLMI Recycling Protocols.  On plastic materials, its label stocks pass the Association of Plastic Recycling’s Critical Guidance Recognition for PET and HDPE.  In the all-important food industry, OMNI is GFSI and BRC Certified, which among other things guarantees that labels won’t peel to ensure safety and enable consistent barcode screening for accurate stock control.

What becomes clear from any visit to the plant is OMNI’s attention to detail and production efficiency.  As one of Martin Automatic and Mark Andy’s leading combined US installations, OMNI exemplifies the value of automating web fed production of high-quality work produced consistently at high speed.  The company’s move into prime labels is an alert for other converters in this field that there is a ‘new kid on the block’ and he’s very well set-up to take a big share of the market!

Toray’s Commitment to Innovation by Chemistry Helps Forge the Future of Flexible Packaging and the Building of a Sustainable Society

Visit Toray Plastics (America), Inc., at Pack Expo International 2022, Booth LU-6716

North Kingstown, RI Attendees at Pack Expo International 2022 (October 23—26) who are seeking information about leading-edge advancements in OPP and PET packaging and label films are invited to meet with the Toray Plastics (America), Inc., team at booth LU-6716. The Toray team will also be updating guests about its developments in sustainability—including R&D, products, and operations—which are aimed at helping to build a sustainable society and circular economy. Toray is part of Toray Industries, Inc., a global organization that believes climate change is the most pressing issue of the 21st century, aims to be carbon-neutral by 2050, and is using its expertise as a materials innovator to make life better for people worldwide.

“The Toray team is eager to attend Pack Expo International in-person and meet CPGs and converters who are new to Toray,” says Franco Chicarella, Director of Sales, Toray Plastics (America), Inc. “We’ll be introducing them to our vast portfolio of packaging and label films and the comprehensive service we can provide to help them commercialize their projects effectively and efficiently.

“Toray has been extremely busy immersing itself in R&D to help customers achieve their immediate and long-term sustainability requirements, expanding its operations, developing next-generation Torayfan® and Lumirror® packaging films, launching the Torayfan roll-fed label film portfolio, developing a BOPP PSL film line, and more. We’re confident that Pack Expo attendees will be very impressed with the depth and breadth of Toray’s capabilities and will want to know more about us,” he says.

Packaging and label film technologies that will be featured at the expo include:

  • The next-generation Torayfan CB3 portfolio of transparent high-barrier BOPP films. CB3 films are available in 70 and 80 gauges in sealable and nonsealable versions. These films are PVdC-free and offer superior barrier-durability protection for nuts, seeds, snacks, cookies, dried fruit, and confections.

  • Torayfan white-pigmented BOPP films for snack food packaging. They are metallized on one side in sealable and nonsealable versions and are available in a variety of barrier levels and heat-seal strengths. Toray’s white films combine the pigment, sealant, and barrier in one web, enabling the manufacture of a standard two-ply lamination.

  • Lumirror PA6HB, a clear, ultra-high-oxygen-barrier film, and MK6HB, a metallized ultra-high-oxygen- and moisture-barrier film that is used as a replacement for EVOH and aluminum foil. Both films offer an excellent aroma barrier.

  • Torayfan Over the Mountain high-barrier BOPP films. These OTM films are designed with integrated sealant technology, improved hermeticity (air tightness), and the seal strength to withstand the air pressure changes that occur when products are transported in changing altitudes, which can cause a package to burst. They’re also robust enough to eliminate the need for a separate sealant film and allow the switch from a complex three-ply lamination to a two-ply structure. OTM films are ideally suited for the regional manufacturer that wants national distribution and for e-commerce applications.

  • Lumirror STM Soft-Touch Matte film, a unique, matte-coated polyester film technology that simplifies processing and enables the manufacture of a robust, upscale, soft-touch matte lamination. The STM film is typically reverse printed with the matte side out and then laminated to a sealant web, or it is extrusion coated for the thermal lamination market. It is available in 48 gauge.

  • Lumirror LumiLid® portfolio of lidding films are dual-ovenable, FDA-compliant, IMS-certified, and available in clear, white, and metallized formats for trays (pulp fiber, PP, APET, CPET, and more) and cup stock. They have a low SIT, broad seal range, outstanding seal integrity, and a consumer-friendly easy peel. Applications include refrigerated and frozen entrees and side dishes, dairy items, and fresh and dried foods. LumiLid XL7AF offers anti-fog functionality for condensation-free film in fresh-food applications, such as refrigerated prepared meals.

  • Lumirror UV-stable PET films used as over-lamination protection for durable outdoor label applications. TA3W film provides 5 to 10 years of UV protection; TA3V offers 3 to 5 years UV protection. Both films have very low haze and high gloss.

  • New Torayfan OPP roll-fed label film portfolio consisting of TLFC clear film in 48, 65, and 75 gauges, TLFM matte film in a 59 gauge, and TLFW white cavitated film in a 110 gauge. These label films offer excellent ink adhesion and printability and very good moisture resistance. The clear film has superior clarity, and the white film’s opacity, brightness, and gloss are also of superior quality and may allow the converter to eliminate white ink.

GEW to highlight energy savings from UV LED at Labelexpo India 2022

UV curing systems manufacturer GEW will be showcasing its full product range at Labelexpo India, with a particular emphasis on its UV LED models. The company will highlight how UV LED technology enables narrow web printers to make substantial energy savings, and to dramatically reduce their carbon footprint.

On 10th November 2022, Delhi Expo Centre opens its doors to printers from across South Asia and beyond. GEW will be exhibiting on stand J31 and will be showing the company’s latest UV LED curing system, AeroLED, at the forefront of its product range. Furthermore, visitors to the show will be able to see AeroLED in operation on a working demonstration press.

As was the case at Labelexpo Americas in September, AeroLED will attract much attention due to the energy savings on offer to printers who upgrade to this system. GEW expects that most print companies will see energy savings between 50-70% when moving from conventional UV to UV LED.

Energy savings achieved by switching to AeroLED come in two forms. Firstly, LEDs produce high UV dose at a fraction of the electrical power of conventional UV systems. Secondly, LEDs do not go into standby and are instant on/off, as required. Currently UV arc systems are left in standby using approximately 20% power while jobs are changed; in comparison, LED will be switched off during this time. Over the 30,000 hour-plus life of an AeroLED lamp, this equates to significant energy savings.

To find out more about the possible energy savings from upgrading to AeroLED, printers can explore the GEW Operating Cost Comparison Calculator on the GEW website, at www.gewuv.com/roi_calculator/

A further benefit of AeroLED is its ArcLED compatibility. For printers still unsure of whether to upgrade from conventional UV, AeroLED’s ArcLED capabilities offer a risk-free upgrade option. Utilising the same fan and ducting formulation as GEW’s industry renowned E2C system, customers can switch between arc and LED curing on any station. In fact, customers with E2C and GEW’s RHINO/RLT power supply platform can upgrade to LED within a matter of hours by simply changing the cassettes and running a software upgrade.

In addition to offering ArcLED capabilities and greatly reduced operating costs, printers upgrading to AeroLED are able to free up a significant level of mains capacity, which can then be used to install new machinery and subsequently increase production capability. Two AeroLED systems have a lower electrical supply requirement than just one conventional arc UV system.

In terms of design, AeroLED is a high power system for full cure, printing, coating and converting applications up to 60cm wide, with the air being extracted by a single centralised fan sited away from the press. There is no need for integrated fans or electronics in the individual lampheads, which eliminates the high-pitched noise and risk of failure that these bring. AeroLED features the same LED chassis and core components as GEW’s LeoLED lamphead, for proven reliability. As with LeoLED, the lamphead has tough watertight seals to protect the LED modules from ingress and to make cleaning easy and safe. Every aspect of the design has been carefully considered to deliver robust performance and long-term reliability. As is the case with all new GEW UV products, AeroLED uses GEW’s RHINO power supply and control range, for ultimate reliability with Industry 4.0 approved, IoT Remote Monitoring as standard.

Robert Rae, Managing Director of Sales at GEW, comments: “UV LED is no longer just a technology for the future, it has become an essential technology for the present day. This change has been driven by the recent and dramatic increases in global energy prices, creating an unprecedented demand for low-energy, sustainable LED solutions as well as improved ink technology and availability. Technological advancement is leading to ever more efficient and cost-effective UV LED products, as is demonstrated by the introduction of AeroLED. The opportunities are huge and we are convinced that LED will soon become the dominant technology in our narrow web market.”
