·   The RISI PPI Awards honours paper and pulp businesses that develop groundbreaking, commercially viable products

·   Mondi’s Hug&Hold beverage packaging recognised as a stand-out product that replaces plastic shrink wrap, while saving costs and driving efficiencies

13 March 2023 – Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has won the coveted PPI Award in the Product Innovation category for its Hug&Hold packaging solution. The Fastmarkets Forest Products PPI Awards are the only global awards dedicated to recognising the achievements of companies, mills and individuals in the pulp and paper sector.

Hug&Hold is a paper packaging solution designed and developed to wrap and transport PET beverage bottles, replacing plastic shrink wrap. It is a recyclable 100% paper-based solution, comprising a kraft paper sleeve and a corrugated clip to secure the bottles and offer a comfortable handle for transportation.

The Product Innovation Award is presented to companies that demonstrate how a newly developed product solves an existing need or problem. Hug&Hold is perfect for FMCG brands and beverage producers, who want more sustainable packaging solutions that appeal to consumers and meet their product protection needs.

A sustainable, functional and fully automated alternative to plastic shrink wrap means that brand owners can safely switch to the recyclable paper-based packaging solution, without any risk to their product or logistics. With Hug&Hold, Mondi is the first to manufacture and market a complete concept, providing a strong and stable solution that is made from renewable and fully recyclable materials, suitable for existing paper waste streams throughout Europe.

Tarik Aniba, Sales & Marketing Director Corrugated Solutions at Mondi, says: “We are committed to making the most sustainable packaging solutions for our customers and we are very proud to see our innovations being recognised by our peers.

Silvia Hanzelova, Sales Director Specialty Kraft Paper at Mondi, says: “Leveraging Mondi’s team of kraft paper and corrugated specialists, we were able to develop a fully paper-based solution with minimal material usage. Following thorough testing, Hug&Hold has been confirmed in terms of runnability and viability.”

Barthel Group chooses Martin Automatic-       for non-stop operation of its narrow web presses

Leading German based label converter, Barthel Group, has installed more Martin Automatic technology at its production facility in Essen.  The latest Martin machines are an MBS non-stop unwind/splicer and LRD automatic transfer rewinder fitted to a Nilpeter FA5 flexo press.  Last year, Barthel also installed Martin MBS machines on two Mark Andy Evolution 5 presses at its atb plant in nearby Herne.  According to Group Managing Director, Mischa Barthel: “Non-stop operation of narrow web technology is the only way to maximise productivity – there is no future here for a label press without automatic roll handling.”

Mischa Barthel and Bernd Schopferer with the Martin Automatic MBS unwind splicer fitted to a Nilpeter FA5 flexo press

The Barthel Group, which was established in 1984 by Joachim Barthel and Detlef Klusmann, currently employs more than 500 people across its six sites, and its €110m/year turnover makes it one of the largest privately owned label converters in Europe.  Now under second generation management with Mischa, Joachim’s son, at the helm, today’s set up includes the parent plant in Essen, Barthel Digitalprint, and acquisitions DES, evert, eprint, and atb in Germany as well as KIEN in the Netherlands.  In all, more than 50 printing presses are in daily production with each plant specialising in certain products for different sectors but also offering the Group spare capacity during busy periods or during breakdowns.

But this is a far cry from how it all began with two-colour and four-colour Webtron water-based flexo presses to comply with the food industry regulations.  The company eventually moved into UV-letterpress and subsequently UV-flexo, UV-offset and digital in the early 2000s.  Mischa Barthel started helping at the factory from the age of 13, and later, having worked his way up through all the company departments, took over as Managing Director in 2008.  It was his experience with an Arsoma TR rewinder fitted to one of the Webtron presses that demonstrated the value of automation, and this principle has been kept firmly in mind for all subsequent investment in new press technology.

“We chose Martin Automatic as our preferred supplier because of its established reputation in the narrow web market – the Martin name appears to be synonymous with reliability and performance, and we had no doubt that it would make a significant impact on our production floor,” said Mr Barthel.  As well as saving time, material, and the physical effort involved with roll changing, the Martin Automatic machines allow the presses to run at consistently higher speeds with none of the print quality variation that is caused by ramping up and down to change rolls manually.  “As well as improving productivity and showing a fast ROI, the Martins have had a motivational effect on the production teams, who now deliver a higher volume of saleable product with less physical effort,” he added.

The Martin Automatic LRD rewinder – ‘there is no future here for a label press without automatic roll handling’, said Mr Barthel

The two latest Martin machines are an MBS non-stop unwind/butt splicer and an LRD rewinder. The MBS features built-in roll loading for rolls up to 455kg.  It has a maximum splicing speed of 150m/min, a maximum web width of 560mm and can handle rolls up to 1016mm in diameter.  The splicer monitors the remaining diameter of the roll and automatically splices to the new roll at a pre-set diameter.  The MBS is followed by a festoon that has Martin’s patented inertia compensation technology for consistent and accurate tensioning of the web throughout the process.  The LRD rewinder, which matches the capability of the MBS, is fitted with two spindles and unloads finished rolls up to 800mm in diameter automatically onto the integral ramp.  It is designed to minimise cycle time and delivers rolls to specific customer requirements.

Today, Barthel’s product range includes labels for the food, wine, and beverage sectors, as well as fabric and homecare, cosmetic and personal care, pharmaceutical, logistics, and industrial products – a broad and highly sustainable base for the business.  The Group utilises a range of print technologies from toner-based digital to inkjet/flexo hybrid, offset, UV-flexo and flat-bed screen.  One might say it has all bases covered!  Materials used are all in line with its mantra of sustainability, so include PCR substrates, detach adhesives, FSC certified materials or compostable solutions.

What of the future?  “We intend to diversify our operation and gain a footprint in new markets and different geographic regions, especially Eastern Europe.  I believe digitalisation and automation are the way forward and our future investments will reflect this – cost control and improved efficiency and speed to market are key. The challenge is to keep the success going by adapting to market conditions!” he concluded.

Infigo are bringing the Artificial Intelligence revolution to print and packaging, by unveiling new parametric design tool at InPrint Munich 2023

West Sussex, England (7th March)

Munich, Germany – Infigo, a leading provider of web-to-print solutions for the print and packaging space, will debut their new parametric designer tool at the InPrint Munich conference, which is co-located with CCE International, on 14-16th March. The product will work in harmony with Infigo’s award-winning MegaEdit online product designer, which will help build on the foundations for additional development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) design tools in the near future.

With the Artificial Intelligence chatbot ‘ChatGPT’ taking the search and content world by storm, Infigo truly believe that the print industry is next in line to benefit from the AI revolution.

The launch of the web-to-print specialist’s AI capabilities comes at a time when the packaging industry is experiencing an increased demand for digital printing solutions that offer greater speed, flexibility, and efficiency.

Parametric design is a method whereby three-dimensional product features on packaging products, for example (such as boxes or cartons), can be shaped according to algorithmic processes rather than created by a designer.

According to Infigo CEO & Founder Douglas Gibson, “The market really is on fire right now, as a plethora of new machine launches from HP and other leading manufacturers are driving efficiencies for the 24/7 digital factory.

Coupled with integrations from leading providers such as Hybrid Software and CERM, the perfect automated print factory is becoming a reality. This is the first in a series of modules and integrations that will allow this unique marketplace to deliver highly profitable short-run packaging through AI.”

This latest web-to-pack innovation will not only be exclusive to the packaging industry, instead with plans to roll out to label converters and general and commercial printers. “We have all seen an upward trend of demand from the packaging space, and it’s never been more important to support that demand with tools our customers and partners require to deliver and excel.” says Gibson.

Infigo will showcase its new parametric design tool at Stand: 2948, Hall B6 of the Munich Trade Fair Centre in Germany. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the AI in action and speak with Infigo CEO & Founder, Douglas Gibson, and Chief Technical Officer, Michael Zauner, alongside other experts from within the labels and packaging industry.

To attend InPrint Munich for free, Infigo has been allocated a limited amount of VIP tickets for the event, worth over €80 per pair, which means free attendance to both the CCE International Exhibition and InPrint Conference. Simply complete the following form.

Sustainability success for Flint Group with improved EcoVadis rating

EcoVadis is the world’s largest and most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings, with a global network of over 85,000 rated companies.

EcoVadis’ scoring takes an evidence-based approach to measuring the supply chain sustainability efforts of a given business. Flint Group has improved its Silver Level rating overall to 65 – raising up from 58, marking it as a business making significant sustainability advances. A key driver for the improved score is the considerable rise in the company’s Environmental category score from 50 to 70 points.

Steve Dryden, CEO of Flint Group, comments: “We are delighted to announce a seven-point increase to our EcoVadis score. The new score shows that our efforts are making an important difference and provides groundwork and direction for further improvement. As a business that leads the way in high-performance inks and coatings designed for circular economies, our actions must match our intentions for a more sustainable supply chain.”

Matthew Rowland-Jones, Sustainability Officer for Flint Group, noted: “Scoring highly on the EcoVadis audit requires a structured and proactive approach to sustainability. XSYS celebrates women in flexo

XSYS, global supplier of flexographic PrePress equipment, printing plates, sleeves and adapters, is marking International Women’s Day on March 8 by highlighting the contributions, experiences and impact of its female employees on the flexographic community. As a business operating in a male-dominated industry, the company is well aware of its responsibility to support and empower women to thrive and succeed in their chosen careers.

Willstaett, Germany. 8 March 2023 –Predominantly male industries are generally defined as those where women account for 25% or less of the workforce. This includes the manufacturing and chemical industries where significantly fewer women are employed than men. Many complex reasons lie behind these low numbers which naturally vary across the globe due to cultural and religious differences.

Bringing more women into the company is a major focus for XSYS whose management team is actively working towards increasing the proportion of female employees at all levels. CEO Dagmar Schmidt said, “As part of our goal to reach higher levels of diversity and inclusion, we are keen on putting more women in leadership roles. One of our KPIs is to have 36% women in managerial positions by 2025, and I’m pleased to say that we are currently tracking at 33–34%, so we may well exceed that number. However, we can only promote women into these positions if enough are entering the industry in the first place, so recruitment of women at entry level is critical.”

Across the organization, women account for around 17% of the total workforce; a number which is set to grow as XSYS continues to implement more initiatives to address this imbalance. However, finding candidates is not easy. Dagmar Schmidt explained, “We have to face the fact that we work in a very conservative specialty chemicals industry, which in addition to being male dominated is also, unfortunately, over aged. Recruiting new generations of women is very difficult but it is also very important, both to get a better balance and better representation, but also to secure the future of the industry.”

Increasing the percentage of women in the workforce can be beneficial in many ways for the company as a whole as well as for the employees. Katja Stuhr, HR Director at XSYS, shared her experience, saying, “I appreciate being part of a technical organization where women increasingly play a bigger role – be that in management positions or on the shop floor. I have the feeling that men value what women have to say, as we bring different skills, new perspectives and more empathy to the business.”

Ana Lúcia Bruno Ribeiro works as Sales & Marketing Support in Brazil, where she is part of a small team. She said, “I have worked in the packaging industry for many years; first in reprographics then in software and now with XSYS, and it is true that it is a man’s world, but in my experience, fitting in is all about building good relationships with your colleagues and the clients, so they know you are capable and an equal partner, not about your gender.”

A new female recruit is Kiersten Borden, who started as Inside Sales Specialist in the XSYS North America team in 2021. With a degree in Graphic Communications from Clemson University, she decided that print would be a great choice. “At the time I knew nothing about the industry, but ultimately, I decided to lean into printing over design because I felt the industry was so unique and specialized. I thought I might have more success with finding a job and growing my career along the way. I also liked the technical aspect and found that I really enjoyed some of the challenges and critical thinking that comes with flexo printing specifically.”

She continued, “The whole sales team has been very supportive right from the start. They are all male and have been in the industry for a while. I actually think they were excited to add a woman to the group; someone who is new to the industry and who adds diversity and a fresh perspective to the team. I think it’s important to have different strengths and skills contributing to a team and to the organization as a whole.”

Initiatives both inside and outside the workplace, such as industry associations, networking events, and mentoring schemes, are helpful in addressing the difficult challenge of enticing more women to work in flexo. They also serve to support women by giving them a sounding board and a place to share any concerns.

One such place is Women of Flexo, a special interest group within the Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) in the US. Set up as a space for women to connect, membership is offered to those working in the pressroom, prepress department, sales roles, management and other positions. Kiersten is an active member of the group. “It’s important to network and relate over shared experiences and the challenges that we might face in this industry,” she said. “At our event in Atlanta last week, there were presentations covering topics such as dealing with difficult personalities, how to thrive in a male-dominated industry, and your path to upskilling. And I’m excited to say that I myself gave a talk on ways to overcome ‘impostor syndrome’ in the workplace.”

Marina Altayo-Armengol, who is XSYS Sales Director for Southern Europe, took over the presidency of the Spanish Graphispack Association in 2021, after being part of the steering committee for eight years. “The shared experience brings value to everyone in the industry – to the individual, to the company and to the industry as a whole; this is true for both men and women,” she commented. “But of course, I’m used to being surrounded by businessmen, so it is quite interesting being the first female president, especially in southern Europe which has traditionally been dominated by men.”

As the proportion of female employees grows, companies are also seeing a push for more flexible working conditions. Katja Stuhr added, “If companies are more adaptable, offering hybrid working or more flexible hours, then I think more women can be motivated to work in the industry. However, we are facing a challenging market for both candidates and employers and it is difficult to fill vacancies in general. There is a lot of work to be done in recruitment and employee retention.”

Dagmar Schmidt concluded, “We’re very serious about improving the statistics and getting more women into positions that are traditionally seen as ‘male’ and to offer an environment that ensures they want to stay, because we believe it is fundamental to the company culture and the overall success of XSYS.”
