Roland DGA Announces Launch of New VersaOBJECT CO Series UV Flatbed andBelt-Driven Hybrid UV Printers

Irvine, Calif., April 11, 2023 – Wide-format imaging leader Roland DGA has announced the launch of its new VersaOBJECT® CO Series inkjets – advanced flatbed and belt-driven UV printers that combine unsurpassed image quality, outstanding productivity, and unmatched versatility, with legendary Roland DG reliability and ease of use. The newest additions to Roland DG’s innovative line of UV-LED devices, and the first to be introduced under the new “VersaOBJECT” brand line, these next-generation inkjets print directly on a vast array of substrates and three-dimensional items, enabling print providers to significantly expand their applications and product offerings.

Replacing the VersaUV® LEC2 S-Series within Roland DGA’s product lineup, the new VersaOBJECT CO Series offers customers a range of configurations and sizes to suit varying production environments and requirements. Customers can choose from two available flatbed printer widths (30” and 64”) as well as three available bed lengths (F200, F300, or F400). The flatbed models enable print providers and product manufacturers to perform product customization as well as direct-printing on flexible and rigid materials, allowing for an extensive range of merchandising, packaging, sign, and display application opportunities. The two Belt-driven hybrid models (CO-300 B200 and CO-640 B200), which allow for faster loading/unloading and can print on roll media as well as rigid materials and three-dimensional objects, are ideal for those seeking even greater versatility and efficiency.

All CO Series UV printers feature an impressive media height of up to 7.87 inches, making it easy for users to direct-print vibrant, detailed graphics on a wide variety of substrates, including plastic, leather, wood, and cloth. The CO Series printers’ carriage clearance as well as their ability to print directly on gently curved or uneven surfaces makes them perfect for the personalization and customization of consumer products, industrial products and parts, interior décor, signage, POP displays, packaging, and much more. In addition, the belt-driven hybrid models allow printing on items with longer shapes, as well as unique and thicker roll media such as natural or synthetic leather, felt, and rubber mats.

Roland DGA has also introduced two new Rotary Rack accessories – the Rotary Rack XL and Rotary Rack XXL – that further expand the product customization capabilities of the CO Series flatbed and belt-driven UV inkjets. Made in the USA, these durable yet lightweight aluminum attachments allow CO Series users to print quickly and accurately around cylindrical objects ranging from .5 inch to 7.75 inches in diameter, including bottles, glassware, drinking flasks, and more. The Rotary Rack attachments are simple to install and are powered completely by the printer’s gantry, making them extremely cost-efficient. The Rotary Rack XL is designed for use with the 30-inch CO Series flatbed and hybrid printers, while the Rotary Rack XXL attachment, which features two 30-inch racks for increased versatility and production capability, is made for the 64-inch CO Series models.

CO Series printers are engineered to take full advantage of Roland DG’s wide-gamut GREENGUARD Gold certified ECO-UV 5 (EUV5) inks, which cure instantly under the powerful UV-LED lamps. Users can choose from eight different ink configurations to suit their specific needs, including dual CMYK for increased productivity, or CMYK with optional Red, Orange, White, Gloss, and Primer. The White and Gloss specialty inks can be used to incorporate stunning dimensional and textural effects into prints, while the onboard Primer allows for improved adhesion and media compatibility.

All CO Series flatbed and belt-driven hybrid UV printers are equipped with innovative features that optimize overall image quality, performance, and ease of use, such as an intuitive Distance Print Mode that increases print consistency on objects that are flat, irregular, or curved, and a Reverse Blow function that removes material from the bed for clean, efficient production. CO Series printers also boast advanced safety features, including a separate control panel that creates a safe operating area, an emergency stop perimeter around the base and side of the device, and signal beacon that clearly highlights the printer status.

“The unique capabilities of these machines, as well as the various configurations available, make the CO Series perfect for any size print business seeking to grow its product offerings and profits,” said Roland DGA’s UV Product Manager, Jay Roberts, “These incredibly versatile, competitively priced machines allow users to print on just about anything, maximize operational efficiency, and produce vibrant, high-quality output that will please their most demanding customers.”

Every CO Series UV printer comes with included VersaWorks® 6 software – Roland DG’s most powerful and intuitive RIP to date. This feature-filled software features a Harlequin RIP dual core engine with 64-bit native processing for enhanced speed and file handling, a simple drag-and-drop interface, variable data printing, nesting, cropping and tiling tools, a special Color Plate Generation function that lets you automatically generate White, Gloss, and Primer layers directly in the RIP, and much more.

INX to offer Sustainability insights at PRINT UV Conference

Schaumburg, IL – April 10, 2023 – The Las Vegas tradition of inviting back popular acts for a return engagement also applies to knowledgeable and well informed industry experts. Rebecca Lipscomb, the Director of Global Regulatory Affairs at INX International Ink Co., will soon experience her return to the centerstage at the 2023 PRINT UV Conference. She is scheduled to address the audience for two seminars at the 15th annual event, May 2-4 at the Encore at Wynn Resort.

Last year Lipscomb was joined by Jonathan Graunke, INX’s VP of UV/EB Technology and Assistant R&D Director, for a presentation on sustainable development goals for printers. On May 3, she will tackle regulatory issues at the 11:30 morning session – Navigating the Green Frontier: Regulations & Sustainability in Print. Later at 3:45 p.m., she will share a road map of information while discussing, Part Two, the Thrilling Revelations: Unraveling the Shades of Sustainability.

Lipscomb said the first session will delve into the always evolving regulatory landscape and discuss the associated complexities and their impact on greener technology.

“Regulatory issues will never go away. They are here for the duration and it’s a growing trend on a global scale,” said Lipscomb, who joined INX in 2011 and has served in her current position since 2020. “I plan to share details about SNURs, Prop 65 – the forever regulation – PFAS, which have millions of definitions covering thousands of substances, and EU regulations. Those are now spreading beyond the European Union and may impact your business.”

Her afternoon presentation is designed to have printer attendees strategize about their own sustainability brand and how it can mesh with brand owner expectations.

“It’s about where everyone is at today and where we go from this point,” remarked Lipscomb. “My goal is to get people thinking and have them build a road map beyond the GHG numbers, in addition to predicting the next evolution of what brand owners may expect, with some options and ideas. I will share some of my personal experiences and what INX has learned.

It is not too late to learn what Lipscomb will discuss. INX has a registration discount code available that any commercial offset, packaging, or specialty printer attendee can access to save $100 on registration fees. INX is also scheduling appointments to meet with ink experts at this year’s event. Take advantage of these offers and preview what INX has in store for the PRINT UV Conference.

LED curing set to take the spotlight for 2023, says Flint Group

April 2023:  2023 is shaping up to be the year of conversion to LED curing for label and narrow web packaging printers, says leading global print consumables manufacturer, Flint Group.

The business notes a drive towards LED curing over traditional UV methods and believes that while the adoption of LED has been slow and steady, market conditions, the cost of energy, and the evolving regulatory landscape is indicating an uptick in the rate of adoption – particularly in Europe.

Niklas Olsson, Global Director Product & Commercial Excellence, Narrow Web at Flint Group, explains: “Just a few years ago, the industry believed that LED curing could never match the quality or performance of UV curing and required significant investment. However, right here and right now, the case for LED curing has never been stronger, so it’s no surprise that we’ve seen businesses of every size making the transition.

“As brands and retailers seek sustainable supply chain partners to support their ESG objectives, achieving more sustainable printing is front and centre for packaging and label printers worldwide. When we talk about LED curing, we talk reduced downtime driving enhanced productivity and the much lower energy use offered in comparison to UV curing – believed to be between 50-80% depending on light dissipation – is becoming an extremely attractive cost and sustainability benefit too.

“With today’s business environment and the cumulative benefits of LED, we’re clearly looking at the tipping point of real market-wide change. This is likely to intensify with global sustainability legislation limiting the use of mercury, which looks set to make UV lamps harder to acquire and dispose of. With LED curing offering lower cost in use, rapid speed, and high quality, it’s time to move the curing conversation forwards, and 2023 could be the year this happens on a broad scale.”

To support customers in this transition, Flint Group designed its EkoCure® range of inks with Dual Cure technology. These inks provide superb performance with both traditional lamps and UV LED curing. In addition, this range includes EkoCure ANCORA F2, designed for stringent food labelling & packaging applications. With EkoCure’s dual curing capabilities, printers can transition unit by unit or press by press.

Mr. Olsson continues: “With EkoCure, and its ability to cure under mercury or UV LED lamps, we are helping our customers futureproof their operations. As the case for LED curing grows, no printer wants to generate unnecessary waste or be stuck with costly UV ink inventory they can’t use as they transition over. With over ten years of experience formulating LED inks, Flint Group is the market leader in this technology with the expertise to make the switch easy and cost-effective for our customers.”

“LED technology today is miles ahead of where it was a decade ago and can finally meet its potential, offering speed, quality, and consistency indistinguishable from traditional UV curing but with additional cost and environmental benefits. From our perspective, it’s the future of narrow web printing. With our pioneering EkoCure range and local technical expertise, we are perfectly positioned to support our customers to adopt LED curing easily.”

INX reinforces commitment for Sustainable solutions and Circular Economy at INFOFLEX 2023

Schaumburg, IL – April 5, 2023 – As package printers, converters and others reunite for INFOFLEX 2023, April 17-18 in Columbus, Ohio, INX International Ink Co. plans to discuss how the company’s sustainability efforts continue to evolve. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet with INX representatives in booth 635 and learn how the INXhrc®, GelFlex-EB,™ INXFlex™ Contour inks and EcoStage GB-XA Oxygen Barrier coatings benefit brand owners and other customers.

INXFlex Contour is one of several sustainable solutions INX International will showcase at INFOFLEX 2023.

This year’s INFOFLEX theme of “Building on the Future” interlaces with the Coloring a Safe and Sustainable Future (CSSF) model INX introduced in 2020. Designed to improve sustainability performance and address the needs of brand owners, customers and consumers, CSSF is aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Renee Schouten, Vice President of Marketing at INX, said the company’s sustainability commitment has evolved to the point where it drives INX’s approach in developing new products and processes.

“There has never been more attention to embrace sustainability as a core within our products, services and culture, and it is only increasing. It is rooted in our company’s vision and mission for the future,” she said. “In addition to the CSSF model, all of our North American printing facilities have committed to a significant reduction of GHG levels before 2030. To achieve this, we are considering potential options from energy providers that will allow us to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.”

Schouten further explained that INX formulates state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly products by addressing three key product development criteria that help brand owners looking to recycle and meet their circular economy objectives: Material Health and Safety, Product Functionality and Sustainable Supply.

“Our portfolio is based on Material Health and Safety to produce the highest quality products that meet regulatory standards and deliver the highest level of safety. We develop solutions with Product Functionality to help resolve social issues such as security and food waste. Overall, all new ink packaging solutions meet our Sustainable Supply goals by using renewable, natural-based raw materials from ethical and sustainably managed sources.”

INXhrc natural-based inks are popular with brand owners and food packaging providers since they are safer and more sustainable and reduce regulatory risk. By employing clean, bio-renewable and sustainable ingredients, CO2 emissions are significantly reduced without sacrificing machine, processing or end-use performance. INXhrc also uses fewer chemicals compared to traditional inks and does not contain allergens, nanomaterials, fluorochemicals, fanal pigments, heavy metals, latex or PTFE.

GelFlex-Electron Beam flexographic inks decrease or eliminate lamination layers in favor of surface print. The ultra-high, solid gel-based inks thicken rapidly for high-speed trapping in the wet state and are fluid for CI flexo printing, producing vivid multi-colored print designs for food packaging and a wide range of household, industrial, outdoor, pet food and pet care products.

INXFlex Contour flexographic inks for shrink sleeve applications cure both UV and LED. These inks offer high performance, excellent transfer, fast drying, and printability at high speeds while maximizing shrink contouring and eliminating post-shrink adhesion loss and ink flaking. The Dual Cure (DC) version offers an option to switch from UV or LED unit by unit, opening the door to cure two ways with one ink system for increased efficiencies and lower applied costs.

EcoStage GB-XA oxygen barrier coatings are formulated to address food safety and preservation issues, as well as improvements in sustainability and recycling. The cost effective, high performance coatings allow for mono-material packaging to replace multi-layer packaging for certain food applications, making the package easier to recycle. They offer an alternative to expensive barrier films while extending shelf life and reducing food waste.

INX experts will be available in booth 635 to answer questions about these and Low Migration packaging inks. Visit the INX website for more information on INX’s flexographic ink solutions.

Low Migration with Mark Andy – – when LM becomes ‘Must Have’?

With Low Migration (LM) becoming ever more important in the label and package print sector, leading narrow web manufacturer Mark Andy will be holding a two-day LM Workshop at its Technology Centre in Warsaw, Poland on the 23rd and 24th of May.

Lena Chmielewska-Bontron, European Marketing Manager at Mark Andy explains: “Our customers’ needs have always been top priority for Mark Andy, and we are aware that LM and its challenges have attracted a lot of attention recently in the label and packaging sectors.  It’s mainly because of legislation changes in industries such as food, beverage, cosmetics, chemicals, and pharmaceutical, and affects those buying print from our customers.  Mark Andy presses have no direct impact on LM of inks and varnishes, but we want to support the market in all LM-oriented challenges.”

To ensure the Workshops offer the latest information, Mark Andy has invited the best and most informed partners to contribute, including J.S. Hamilton, a certified research Lab Centre that combines a broad and comprehensive range of in-house analysis with market research and additional survey and control services.  “We’re convinced that our joint initiative will enable participants to extend and upgrade their knowledge on this challenging issue,” she added.

The LM workshops are designed to appeal to printers and converters from around the world: executives/CEOs, press operators, print specialists, and technology managers will all be catered for, and both existing and future customers are warmly welcomed, as well as other print service providers interested in LM issues.

Mark Andy’s European Technology Centre will offer the company the opportunity to present several alterative solutions from its broad portfolio.  An Evolution Series E5 flexo press will be one of the highlights, equipped with drying systems suited to different inks formulations, including UV, LED, and water-based.  Two hybrid solutions, the Digital Series HD, and Digital Pro 3, will be in the spotlight too.  Lukasz Chruslinski, European Sales Manager and Lukasz Kaczynski, Demo Room Manager Mark Andy will be demonstrating the key elements of flexo and hybrid, both inkjet- and toner-based printing techniques, and showing how each press is set-up.

Adam Fotek, from J.S. Hamilton, will discuss issues relating to ink migration and invite participants to take a ‘virtual walkaround’ the company’s Test Lab.  He will also explain the principles and requirements for measuring ink migration on labels for food, cosmetic, chemical and beverage products.  Ink migration will be also main subject of another presentation from Siegwerk, as well as one from GEW drying systems.

“After the presentations, participants are invited to take part in a Q&A session,” adds Lukasz Kaczynski.  “From previous experience, we are expecting our visitors to discuss very specific issues and challenges in the search for possible solutions.  All our customer-oriented events have offered a great opportunity for individual chats and talks.”

The first day of the workshops will be followed by a dinner, which is always a great occasion for discussions in a less formal atmosphere.  “We’re convinced that the event will give our current and future customers a solid background of knowledge and help them to answer the question: How do I reach the lowest possible level of ink, varnish and coating migration in label and packaging production?”

With increasingly stringent and changing LM legislation, converters, and brand owners as well as product manufacturers are coming under increasing pressure to conform.   For more detailed information, Mark Andy has created a dedicated page on its website, where interested parties can register: https://go.markandy.com/e/990852/low-migration-/7ghp2/78777319?h=N4QLSGrzs_OtB7o8_-iArfxJVY8b4eUg8vnGMrnyy48

Hrdlick was honored with the Ault Award for outstanding leadership and Kochanny received an Ink Pioneer Award.

John Hrdlick and Jim Kochanny.

For Hrdlick, it is a fitting tribute after lifetime involvement in the ink industry. He is retiring on April 30 after 49 years, the last five as INX’s leader. His 46-year run with the company began in 1977 as a third shift worker with Acme Printing, which was later acquired by INX’s parent company, SAKATA INX.

Throughout the years, Hrdlick was promoted many times and took on responsibilities that impacted every INX business segment – Offset, Metal Decorating, Energy Cure, Liquid Inks and Digital technologies. He also dedicated his time to various associations, including serving on the IMDPA Board of Directors and the NAPIM board. He previously was the recipient of a NAPIM Ink Pioneer Award in 2013.

On April 20, Hrdlick is being feted by the Metro New York Printing Ink Association (MNYPIA) where he will be presented with the esteemed Anthony Mauriello Award.

“My retirement is bittersweet to some extent as five years seems like a short time in my role as President and CEO,” he said. “The past five years have been challenging considering the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and its ongoing impacts on the work force and extended supply chain disruptions. I am proud of how our employees have worked through these challenges, and after 46 years at INX and 49 years in the industry, I’m looking forward to the future. It’s time for my wife, Dawn, and I to reconnect with our family in North Carolina, especially since our seventh and eighth grandchildren are on the way.”

Kochanny has worked tirelessly throughout a career that began in 1979 as a packaging and warehouse specialist. He joined INX 14 years later, starting as the plant manager at the Mason Ave. facility in Chicago and became GM of that location and the Morse Ave. liquid facility in 1999.

Subsequent promotions over the years led him to become the Director of Liquid Operations in 2006; a Senior VP and member of the INX Board of Directors in 2013; and Offset and Metal Operations were added to his responsibilities in 2018. He was elevated to Senior VP/Chief Operating Officer in 2019.

Kochanny has developed a reputation for embracing new technology and his support of the NIPIRI Technical Conference and training seminars. He is also known for being able to operate all of the manufacturing equipment at INX’s production facilities. More recently, he has been involved with INX’s growth planning and worked directly with the engineering division on planning for all expansion and new facility development projects.
