Roland DGA’s V-BOND Ink Now Compatible with VersaOBJECT™ CO Series and VersaUV® LEC2 S-Series UV Printers

Irvine, Calif., Aug. 31, 2023 – Roland DGA Corporation, a leading provider of large-format inkjet printers, printer/cutters, vinyl cutters, and other advance imaging devices, has announced that its specially formulated V-BOND Ink can now be used with VersaOBJECT™CO Series and VersaUV® LEC2 S-Series UV printers. Previously V-BOND Ink was only available for use with Roland DGA’s VersaUV LEF and LEF2 benchtop UV printers.

V-BOND Inks have gained significant popularity worldwide as a safer alternative to standard UV inks. These durable, cost-effective inks image beautifully, adhere well to a wide variety of substrates, and are extremely scratch- resistant. They offer an expanded color gamut, with a magenta density that results in more vibrant reds, adding an extra level of vibrancy to your prints. In addition, V-BOND Inks are California Proposition 65 and Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) certified, Nickel-free, Phthalate-free, and air-shipping compliant. They’re also less aggressive to the rubber and plastic parts of the printer’s capping station, significantly improving the health and longevity of the printheads, thereby reducing maintenance requirements.

Customers who purchase new CO Series or LEC2 S-Series UV printers have the option of enabling their devices for V-BOND Ink use by performing a few simple steps, including downloading the latest (version 1.50 or later) firmware and updating their VersaWorks output software to version 6.18 or later. Existing LEC2 S-Series owners who want to add V-BOND Ink capability to their printers can do so through an authorized Roland DGA dealer at a cost that the dealer will determine.

“Having the ability to use V-BOND Ink further enhances the versatility of our CO Series and LEC2 S-Series flatbeds, opening up new and lucrative creative opportunities for users,” said Jay Roberts, Roland DGA UV Printer Product Manager. “Along with the safety and compliancy benefits, these wide-gamut, cost-effective inks offer additional advantages over other UV inks – like superior surface adhesion and scratch resistance, faster tactile build, and better long-term outdoor durability, just to name a few.”

UV Choice Printing brings “remarkable” savings and benefits to Adhesivos Orcajada

UV Choice Printing, available through KODAK FLEXCEL NX Print Suite for Narrow Web and enabled by the latest advanced plate surface patterning technology from Miraclon, is delivering significant time, ink and substrate waste savings for leading Spanish flexo tag and label manufacturer, Adhesivos Orcajada.

Over the past twelve months, the company monitored the performance of UV Choice Printing on their seven Omet UV presses that produce around 65% of all its flexo printed tag and label jobs. Documented savings include:

·       Reduced ink consumption by over 20%

·       Faster job changeover & set-up times of 15-20%

·       Significant substrate savings thanks to faster start-ups

“The results are remarkable,” said Pedro Orcajada Montalban, Owner of Adhesivos Orcajada. “The impact on job changeover and set-up times are especially positive, at 15-20% faster. All this translates into significantly reduced substrate wastage and over 20% in ink consumption savings, which saves money and makes the process more sustainable. We’ve also reduced prepress times with much faster platemaking.

“On press, KODAK FLEXCEL NX Plates also perform consistently, throughout the run and from job-to-job. The greater latitude on press means reduced operator interventions and fewer press stops for cleaning or color adjustments. Adding these benefits together with UV Choice Printing has proved a highly beneficial investment.”

Growing with FLEXCEL NX Technology

Adhesivos Orcajada is a longtime user of KODAK FLEXCEL NX Technology from Miraclon. “When we decided to upgrade our platemaking technology from analogue to digital more than 10 years ago, we tested and ultimately invested in a FLEXCEL NX System based on our first impressions and the overwhelming positive feedback we received from industry colleagues,” recalls Pedro. “From day one, we enjoyed a step change in stability on press, resulting in less dot gain, better highlights and consistent reproduction. Our customers were impressed with the positive change, but even more so our production team, who welcomed the simpler, less stressful, and more consistent press production process. Since then, we’ve established a close consultative relationship with Miraclon, so it was another collaborative approach when Miraclon selected us as a beta site for UV Choice Printing.”

UV Choice Printing, enabled by advanced plate surface patterning technology and accessed through FLEXCEL NX Print Suite for Narrow Web, is specifically designed to deliver better performance and stability for label and other UV flexo printed narrow web applications across a range of substrates. It optimizes UV ink transfer and increases ink density by up to 15%, minimizes on-press troubleshooting of quality issues, and delivers better reproduction of solids, fine lines, crisp barcodes and text at lower ink volumes. Other benefits are faster press set-up, reduced substrate wastage, and faster plate imaging times.

“Immediate impact” of UV Choice Printing

José Sanchez Gallego, Design & Prepress Manager for Adhesivos Orcajada, says UV Choice Printing made “an immediate impact — literally from the first job. With any new way of working, it’s vital to have the support of the production team, but in this case we decided to deliver the first set of plates to the press without any advance warning. That way, we believed we’d get an objective and unprejudiced reaction from the press crew. Their response was overwhelmingly positive — they saw the efficiency and consistency benefits at once. It was the same with customers, that complimented us on the clear improvement in quality.

“UV Choice Printing is delivering on-press benefits that make a really big difference for us in terms of efficiency, ink and substrate savings, and print quality,” continues José. “In particular, ink laydown is much improved. We achieve 100% uniform coverage in both solids and shadows without impacting midtones and highlights, which we no longer have to sacrifice to achieve both solid colors and a wide tonal range.

“As a rule, UV printed jobs are of higher quality and mostly on coated substrates. Because UV Choice Printing eliminates many of the difficult-to-control variables, press set-up is much simpler and more streamlined, and we get to color much faster than before. Without UV Choice Printing, for example, anilox selection could be complicated on certain jobs and changes more frequent as operators searched for the ideal anilox/ink combination. That no longer happens, as we now utilize UV Choice Printing for 100% of UV printed jobs.”

Up to 50% saving in press set-up times

As part of its investment in Print Suite for Narrow Web to utilize UV Choice Printing, Adhesivos Orcajada gained access to PureFlexo™ Printing for water-based ink applications, which “is especially beneficial when we’re producing a lot of solids.”  José says that working in tandem, the two solutions have yielded further significant savings when UV jobs have to be rerouted to water-based production, and vice versa. “This happens occasionally for scheduling reasons, and it used to be a headache because of the prepress adjustments involved — modifying the TIFF and re-RIPing, for example. Now, despite working with different patterns, in most cases modifications are unnecessary, and we can consistently set up the new job being confident the results will be predictable. As a result, we’re saving around 50% in job set-up time — a huge difference.”

José adds that even when they don’t need to switch between presses for a specific job, the production team has reported a 15-20% reduction in press set-up times.

Continued benefits

UV Choice Printing is also enabling Adhesivos Orcajada to grow the business and take on additional work. “The addition of UV Choice Printing further allows us to shift certain jobs from digital printing to flexo as it enables us to produce stable, high-quality prints at profitable speeds while enjoying measurable ink and substrate savings. Being able to utilize flexo for a wider range of jobs is especially beneficial when we’re dealing with highly porous, textured substrates.”

Pedro concludes: “UV Choice Printing with its widely versatile advanced plate surface patterning, together with the Miraclon team behind it, has completely changed my perception on the quality and efficiency that can be achieved in narrow web flexo printing. I thought we were doing just fine before, but now I know that with it, we’re doing just so much better.”

G2 Graphic Service Installs Two Versafire EPs from HEIDELBERG to Better Serve Entertainment & Gaming Industries

Kennesaw, Ga. August 29, 2023 – “Whatever It Takes” has been the company motto of G2 Graphic Services since its doors opened in 1969. The now full-service commercial and packaging printer, located in North Hollywood, CA, began its life when John Beard started selling film to movie production companies. As the industry started to digitize, Beard knew the company needed to evolve and decided to purchase its first press in 1999 thus marking its start as a printing company. G2, now run by son John Beard, Jr., is still committed to doing “whatever it takes” to meet his customers’ demands – no matter how quick the turnaround. Needing to increase its capacity to keep up with its uptick in business post COVID, G2 recently installed two Versafire EP digital presses from HEIDELBERG

While G2 still serves the movie and entertainment industries, the company’s customer base has grown over the years to include recording studios, casinos and gaming, travel and entertainment and health and cosmetic companies. Unfortunately, many of these industries were severely impacted by the effects of COVID-19, which left G2 to navigate a tumultuous few years. “We were lucky the business survived,” said John Beard, Jr., President of G2. “We’re fortunate we made it to the other side, and our sales are now back to pre-COVID levels.” Just as its business started to recover, the company began to encounter new challenges finding the right materials to meet its customers’ requests due to the paper supply shortage. “Our digital press required approved media that had to be pre-treated,” said Beard. “It was very difficult finding what we needed to serve our customers whose business was also just starting to come back.” Needing a more versatile solution, G2 decided to install a Versafire EP from HEIDELBERG, which accepts virtually any stock from 35 lb. text to 24 pt. board, including synthetics. “I like that we can pull material off our offset press if needed, cut it down, and load it directly onto our Versafire,” said Beard.

Knowing he needed two Versafires to accommodate all of G2’s workload, Beard, although a long-time HEIDELBERG supporter, was not completely sure the Versafire could handle some of its complex, long run variable data direct mailings, which can sometimes run upwards of 60,000 sheets. HEIDELBERG, confident in the machine’s abilities, allowed G2 to try the Versafire “risk free” – meaning the company was able to put the Versafire EP on its production floor for 90 days and if not completely satisfied with the machine, HEIDELBERG would remove the Versafire and refund G2 its costs. Thrilled with the quality, reliability, and flexibility of the machine, G2 proceeded with installation of its second Versafire EP four months after installing its first. “We couldn’t be happier,” said Beard. “We can now take some of our longer variable data jobs and split them between the two machines and be assured the color and quality will match.”

The company, no longer constrained by substrate requirements, is also able to print a variety of hybrid offset-digital print jobs between its Speedmaster CD 102 and Versafire EP. According to Beard, “We can run 150,000 four-color postcards on the press, cut them down, and run all of the backs with variable data on the Versafire. The flexibility is great.” Additionally, G2 is using the Versafire EPs to run a variety of synthetic materials for security badges for film premieres throughout the country and for menus used at the many restaurants in Universal Studios, which is located only a short distance from G2’s office.

“Our very first press was HEIDELBERG. Trying HEIDELBERG digital was just a natural evolution of our twenty-five-year relationship with them,” said Beard. After an efficient installation and training by knowledgeable trainers, G2, who also owns a POLAR cutter and Stahlfolder, has not looked back on its decision to purchase Versafire. According to Beard, “HEIDELBERG is always there to respond and provide quick solutions. It’s a true partnership.”
