Great Lakes Label adds Mark Andy DSiQ-R ‘powered by Domino’ digital retrofit module

By: Domino

Great Lakes Label, located in Comstock Park, Michigan USA, is the very first installation in North America of the new Mark Andy DSiQ-R ‘powered by Domino’ digital retrofit module.

The new Mark Andy DSiQ-R was installed onto an existing 10-color 13” Mark Andy Performance Series P5 flexo press.  The DSiQ-R is a digital retrofit module, designed & built by Domino, for converters to add digital printing capability onto an existing flexographic press… without adding additional footprint.

Utilizing the industry-leading Domino N610i digital UV inkjet print engine, the DSiQ-R is a compact retrofittable 3-in-1 flexible hybrid solution, allowing Great Lakes Label to maximize productivity for full hybrid printing, digital-only printing, or flexo-only printing.  It is a compact, flexible solution without the need for additional space, delivering excellent print quality and production flexibility, while taking advantage of quick turnaround and non-stop production for multiple SKU jobs. (This retrofit is available from Mark Andy as the DSiQ-R, and from Domino as the N610i-R).

We caught up with Tony Cook, Founder & CEO of Great Lakes Label to learn more about the business, and the drivers for adding the Mark Andy DSiQ-R.  Our visit was captured in this VIDEO: Great Lakes Label.

The Drive for Digital Printing

Great Lakes Label has built a reputation for providing high-quality, innovative label solutions across industries including food, beverage, household goods, automotive, and horticulture. As customer demands shifted toward shorter runs, increased customization, and faster turnaround times, the need for digital printing became clear.

“We have always been focused on innovation,” said Tony. “With growing demand for shorter production runs and variable printing, we knew digital was the next logical step. But we wanted to do it in a way that complemented our existing capabilities without compromising efficiency.

Why Domino?  Why Mark Andy?

Great Lakes Label explored various digital printing options over the years but was drawn to Domino’s technology for its superior quality, reliability, and ability to seamlessly integrate with their current flexographic operations. The company was particularly interested in a solution that would enhance productivity without requiring a complete overhaul of its press lineup.

“Our relationship with Mark Andy played a key role,” said Tony. “When we learned that they were collaborating with Domino on a retrofit solution, it was exactly what we had been hoping for—an innovative, hybrid approach that would allow us to maximize our existing press investments while adding digital capabilities.”

The Power of Partnership

The collaboration between Great Lakes Label, Domino, and Mark Andy exemplifies the power of industry partnerships. By installing the Domino-powered Mark Andy DSiQ-R onto an existing P5 flexo press, Great Lakes Label can now offer its customers greater flexibility, enhanced print quality, and improved turnaround times while maintaining the embellishment and finishing capabilities of their traditional press setup.

Mark Andy, a long-standing partner of Great Lakes Label, played a crucial role in bringing this integration to life. With decades of experience in flexographic press manufacturing and innovation, Mark Andy provided the necessary expertise and support to ensure seamless implementation. Their continued collaboration with Great Lakes Label underscores their shared commitment to driving advancements in the label industry.

“We were thrilled to be the first North American label converter to implement this technology,” added Tony. “This partnership is a game-changer for us, enabling us to better serve our customers with high-quality, high-efficiency digital printing while maintaining all the benefits of flexo production.”

Setting the Standard

The digital retrofit module delivers vibrant print with CMYK+ W digital UV ink, crisp detail, and exceptional durability. Combined with Mark Andy’s expertise in flexographic printing and finishing, this investment positions Great Lakes Label as a forward-thinking leader in the label industry.

“Domino has been in the inkjet game for years, Mark Andy in flexo for years, and the reputation of both companies for quality and service made them the ideal partner for this transition,” said Tony. “With this new capability, we’re not just keeping up with industry trends—we’re setting them.”

Schreiner ProTech Develops Mobile “Free Fall” Feasibility Test for Its Robust RFID-Labels Portfolio

By: Schreiner ProTech

Oberschleissheim, Germany Schreiner ProTech, a Germany-based global leader in developing and manufacturing innovative functional labels with value-added benefits for the automotive and engineering-based industries, has developed a compact, mobile demonstration module designed to showcase the exceptional resilience of its proprietary Robust RFID-Labels technology.

In designing the demonstration unit, nicknamed the “Free Fall,” Schreiner ProTech engineers sought to create a system that displayed – vividily and memorably – the resilience and persistent functionality of its Robust RFID-Labels. The result was a stress test that, while appearing simple, considers a variety of real-world applications and scenarios.

At its core, the transparent unit showcases a series of “smash tests” – the gravitational equivalent of an automobile crash test – in which objects of various weights are dropped from differing heights. Crucially, the unit allows ample room to test products with a range of shapes and sizes, allowing Schreiner ProTech engineers to simulate the impact stress of real-world manufacturing, handling and supply chain scenarios.

Designed at the Schreiner Competence Center Services, the demonstrator has drawn parallels to a miniature guillotine: Operating a lever activates a mechanism that causes a weight to fall on the RFID chip from a defined height. Between each test, chips are read to affirm their enduring functionality.

The unit’s simplicity also offers portability: less than a meter in height and weighing roughly 10 kilograms, the demonstrator is compact enough to be displayed at trade shows, allowing a broad set of potential customers to witness first-hand how durable the Robust RFID-Labels truly are.

“Our customers expect absolute reliability even under harsh conditions,” said Johannes Becker, Head of the Schreiner Competence Center LogiData. “We wanted to make this key differentiator of our Robust RFID-Labels tangible in a fun, instantly impressionable fashion.”

Schreiner ProTech’s Robust RFID-Labels consist of an integrated RFID tag secured via the label’s special construction. This avoids potential damage to the RFID chip due to mechanical impact during the manufacturing and handling processes, or harsh environments during the shipping, warehousing or operation phases. The result is more reliable RFID chip performance from production to final use – even on difficult-to-label containers. Notably, Schreiner ProTech can offer customized label design to suit individual applications and manufacturing setups.

The Robust RFID-Labels utilize protective elements designed to systematically absorb mechanical stress. Customizable to the specific mechanical stress conditions encountered by individual customers, the thin, flexible structures are suitable for use with all RFID technologies and antenna geometries. They are easily incorporated into a broad range of production scenarios.

Roland DGA Announces the Availability of New Roland DG Connect Designer Software

By: Roland DGA

Irvine, Calif., July 1, 2025 – Roland DGA, a leading provider of wide-format inkjet printers and printer/cutters worldwide, has announced the availability of a new software application – Roland DG Connect Designer – that enables Roland DG printer users to easily design print-ready graphics optimized for output on their devices.

As part of Roland DG Connect, a set of software tools that empowers users’ businesses and optimizes every step of their workflow with Roland DG printers, the Designer application (which comes with the free Basic Roland DG Connect plan) offers three key functions. The first is easy-to-use design creation for novice users, such as in-store workers or small business owners, who may be unfamiliar with professional applications. Roland DG Connect Designer accomplishes this by significantly simplifying the design process as well as supplying an extensive library of images, shapes, fonts, and illustrations.

A second function is the generation of automated print settings. Instead of having to set detailed print settings in the dedicated VersaWorks 7 RIP software running the printer, Roland DG Connect Designer produces the necessary print settings automatically during the design phase and enables printing to begin immediately once the job is sent to the printer, allowing for a faster, more streamlined workflow.

A third set of capabilities allows for the unique functions of various printers to be incorporated into the design by utilizing modules specific to each device. With Roland DG Connect Designer, users can choose to add the desired design features made possible by their printer and work requirements, and install only the functions they require, for a simpler and more cost-effective operation. Initially, for users of the new DA-640 dimensional surface printer, a DIMENSE module offers preset embossing effects, file preparation, and visualization for creating textured output on the DA-640.

“Roland DG is renowned not only for making digital devices that offer unsurpassed ease of use, but also for developing software that makes what was once complicated incredibly simple,” said Roland DGA’s Software Product Manager, Scott Burgess. “With Designer and a Roland DG printer, even those with little or no design experience can bring their creative visions to life quickly and easily.”
